We celebrated my parents Golden Wedding anniversary in Kateel Temple at Mangalore where we had the Chariot Puja and feeding of more than 10000 people for that specific day, it was 28th December. My brother Om performs every year the Puja on Amavasyya day on the beginning of Navratri to Goddess Durga.

Mangalore is a palm-fringed and beautiful port on the West Coast of Karnataka. Its backwaters, palm-grooves and climate make Mangalore an attractive heaven. Mangalore city derives its name from Mangala Devi, the Goddess of Fortune. It is located near the rivers Netravathi and Gurpur. Mangalore is a center for the export of cashew nuts and coffee.

Kateel Durga Parameshwari Temple
Is situated on the banks of River Nandini, amidst beautiful surroundings, is the spiritual energy center of South Kanara district. Goddess Durga is the loving and caring mother of the people of South Kanara. Surrounded by lush green fields and beautiful hills, Kateel has become a famous pilgrimage and a tourist center over the years.

Kateel Durga Parameshwari

Kateel is located 30KMs North of Mangalore. Traveling to Kateel in the winding roads amidst green hills and valleys is a very pleasant and memorable experience. Thousands of devotees visit Kateel daily to seek the blessing of goddess Durga, also to participate in Simhamaasa, Navarathri and other holy occasions. The temple's trust also encourages several forms of arts. Notable amoung them is the Yakshagana dashavathara mela which was started as an offering to the goddess. During dussera, navaratri and other annual celebrations several sacred rituals are performed.

Kadri Manjunath Temple:
Kadri is another ancient historic spot in Mangalore. The Kadri Temple has its nine tanks, its square temple, nestling at the foot of the highest hill, draws to Mangalore hundreds of visitors annually.The Lokeshwara bronze statue of the Kadri Manjunatha Temple is the best bronze statue in India. On top of the hill King Kundavarma Bupendra built a mutt which came to be called 'Jogimutt'. There are some stone caves on top of the hill which are known as the caves of the Pandavas. The idol of Lord Manjunathaswamy of the temple is called as oldest of the South Indian Temples. The seven sacred ponds, Jogi Mutt and caves of Pandavas are the pilgrim attractions here.

St. Aloysius Church
The walls of the church are covered with the paintings of the artist Antony Moshaini of Italy. The Church was built in the year 1899-1900. St. Aloysius College Chapel, an architectural gem, comparable with the Sistine chapel in Rome, is situated on lighthouse hill. The special beauty of the chapel is the wonderful series of paintings that virtually cover every inch of the interior roof and walls.

Kudroli Gokarnath Temple:
Recently this temple has been renovated and now it is one of the tourist attraction places in Mangalore.

Mangaladevi Temple:
This city is called as Mangalore just because of this temple. This temple was built by the Ballal family of Attavar in memory of a Princess of Kerala.

Shri Sharavu MahaganapathiShri Sharavu Mahaganapathi Temple :

Mangalore is known as a pilgrim center and boasts of many sacred temples like Sharavu, Kadri, Mangaladevi, Kudroli etc. Out of these Sri Sharavu Sharabeshwara - Sri Mahaganapathy Kshetra is an outstanding, pious center of great illustrious history of marathon 800 years.

Dharmasthala Manjunatha Temple
Situated on the banks of river Nethravathi and surrounded by the lush green forests and hills of Malnad, Dharmasthala is known for it's beautiful surroundings and Sri Manjunathaswamy Temple. In Dharmasthala, charity is a way of life, extended to all without discrimination. Sri Dharmasthala which is one of the sacred places in South India and is a famous pilgrim centre. It is situated in the village of Dharmasthala, in Beltangady Taluk of South Kanara district about 75 kms from Mangalore.

This scenic beauty is situated 105 Km. away from Mangalore, this is a unique place where the Arabian sea and the river is separated by a narrow road.

Places to see

Kadri cave and temple: This Keralan-style temple's Lokeshwara statue is reputed to be one of the best bronze statue in India.
